With artificial lens insertion during cataract surgery the back membrane of the natural lens is left in place for support. Over time 75% of people will experience wrinkling or scarring of that membrane that will slowly reduce their vision. Those processes can take just a few months or can take several years to occur. Unlike a cataract which requires surgery for removal, the damaged membrane can be removed with painless laser treatment. It is a simple procedure performed in our consulting rooms.
The procedure is called YAG laser capsulotomy. Your doctor uses a laser beam to make a tiny hole in the affected membrane to let light pass through and so restore clear vision. It is a surgical procedure but with absolutely minimal risk associated. Retinal detachment is one associated risk, however. It shows as a dark veil which affects vision from either side. Sometimes apparent flashing lights may seem to appear as a result of retinal detachment. In the highly unlikely event that you experience either of these symptoms, you should contact Vision Centre straight away.
